Major Construction Underway At 'Parklands' System

A ceremony was held today in eastern Louisville to mark the start of major construction on the Parklands of Floyds Fork, a 4,000 acre parks system to be developed along Floyds Fork Creek. Officials hammered ceremonial stakes at what will be the first phase of the system, Beckley Creek Park, 616 acres of recreational area and greenspace off Shelbyville Road. It will be followed by three other parks containing trails, canoe launches and nature preserves. The entire system is being designed by the Philadelphia firm Wallace, Roberts and Todd. Landscape architect Ignacio Bunster-Ossa says he’s been inspired by the unique contours of Floyds Fork Creek. "There’s not two reaches of this creek that’s alike, and that richness is something we were compelled to emulate in the land. By creating paths, by creating curvatures, by creating alignments that would treat the eye to something special here and something special there," he said. The $113 million parks system is part of the 21st Century Parks initiative, led by the family of Humana founder David Jones.
