Mayor Undecided On Library Plan

Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson says he hasn’t yet taken a position on a new proposal to expand and upgrade the city’s library system. The plan unveiled by a Metro Council work group Monday calls for the city to float 80 million dollars in bonds between 2011 and 2015 to open new libraries.Mayor Abramson says the city will definitely have bonding capability during that time, but it’s hard to tell now what other projects will have to be funded.“Who knows in 2012 or 2013 whether we’ll need to bond additional firehouses or upgrade additional police stations," he says.Abramson says he’s still waiting for details of an expansion plan being put together by the library advisory commission. The council decided to formulate a new plan after last November’s defeat of a referendum to pay for library improvements through an increase in the occupational tax.
