McConnell: Democrats Sabotaged Supercommittee

Speaking on the Senate floor Monday, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., accused Democrats and the White House of intentionally undermining the supercommittee to gain political points in next year's elections. The 12-member panel was charged with cutting $1.2 trillion in debt from the federal budget over ten years, but announced last week it had failed to reach a consensus before the November 23 deadline.McConnell specifically called out Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY., who was the Democrats chief spokesman, for predicting the bipartisan panel would fail to cut government spending in early November. From The Hill: "It’s hard to escape the conclusion that some in the White House and even some Democrats here in the Senate were rooting for failure and doing what they could to ensure it." "I mean, what else are we supposed to think when the Democrats’ top political strategist here in the Senate goes out on national television and predicts failure two weeks ahead of the deadline and then comes right out and says yesterday that he thinks the outcome he predicted is good politically for the president?"
