The Roman Catholic Diocese of Owensboro has a new bishop.

Father William Francis Medley became the fourth Bishop of the Owensboro diocese during a nearly three-hour hour ceremony Wednesday at the sports arena in the western Kentucky city. The rite of ordination was led by Louisville ArchbishopJoseph Kurtz.

The 57 year old Medley has had a variety of assignments in the Louisville area since his ordination to the priesthood in 1982. As bishop, he will oversee a diocese that includes 79 parishes, 19 schools and a hospital.

He says its a calling he embraces enthusiastically.

“In the coming weeks and months, I must become a good listener, a good student,” he said. “One who receives and teachesd in union with Pope Benedict and the College of Bishops, but also that I listen and learn from you.”

Medley succeeds Bishop John McRaith, who is retiring.
