Meetings On TARC Cuts Begin

The Transit Authority of River City—or TARC—has begun holding public meetings on proposed service cuts.TARC has put forward a plan to cut ten routes and reduce service on 22 others starting in February. The changes would close a two million dollar budget shortfall caused by dropping occupational taxes. At the first meeting Tuesday morning, Deborah O'Gormann said TARC should ask other agencies for funds to prevent cuts."Get the chamber of commerce, sit everybody down and say, 'Two million dollars. Let's get our bus system going.' Let's not flatten the tires," she says.TARC Director Barry Barker says service cuts are a last resort, as federal and state relief seems unlikely to come in time to prevent reductions, if at all."One of the things that we pointed out to people in Frankfort, to the legislature, is that virtually every other program they fund, folks need to get to," he says.A total of six public meetings are being held this week. Barker says the input will help TARC fine tune the proposed reductions. The TARC board is expected to act on the cuts next week.Tuesday, Dec. 8 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. TARC Union Station 1000 West Broadway Wednesday, Dec. 9 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. New Albany – Floyd County Public Library 180 West Spring St New Albany, Ind 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fern Creek High School 9115 Fern Creek Road Thursday, Dec. 10
