Memorial Day Exists to Honor Fallen Soldiers

From Kentucky Public Radio's Tony McVeigh If you have Memorial Day off, perhaps you’re wondering why it’s a national holiday. Kentucky Military Curator Bill Bright says it’s a day to honor military personnel who gave their lives in service to our nation. He says it originally was called Decoration Day, when women would decorate the graves of loved ones killed in the Civil War."The northern communities were celebrating it at one time and the southern communities were celebrating it at other times. It’s not until after WWI that you see it come together," said Bright.Originally observed on May 30th, Memorial Day now falls on the last Monday in May. Bright hopes everyone will pause for a brief moment on Memorial Day to remember the true meaning of the holiday.
