Metro Offers More Classes to Help Smokers Quit

The Metro Department of Health and Wellness has added more classes to help Louisvillians stop smoking.Kentucky has the highest smoking rate in the country at 30.2 percent, according to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index."There are lots and lots of people around town who want to break the tobacco habit," said Health Department spokesman Dave Langdon. "We find that generally the classes are very well attended."The free 13-week program uses the Cooper/Clayton Method to Stop Smoking. The method was developed by University of Kentucky faculty members Dr. Thomas Cooper and Dr. Richard Clayton more than 25 years ago.   The program includes weekly support group meetings and nicotine replacement products for participants.Langdon said the success rate of people five years after completing the course is 42 percent.For a schedule of smoking cessation classes or to register, click here.
