Milton-Madison Bridge Project Moves Ahead

by Stephanie CrosbyThe Milton-Madison Bridge Project is moving forward, after getting environmental clearance from the Federal Highway Administration.Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesperson Chuck Wolfe says the approval is required by the National Environmental Policy Act of 1970.“There has to be documentation on the front end of a project that it is not going to significantly adversely affect the environment," says Wolfe, "and this is required in order to get federal approval to move ahead with the project.”Wolfe says both Kentucky and Indiana are working to secure a federal grant of 20-million dollars in stimulus funds to replace the superstructure of the bridge between Milton, Kentucky and Madison, Indiana. They hope to begin construction this fall, with the bridge being closed for the project in the fall of 2011. The total cost of the project is 131-million dollars.
