Minimum Wage Increases This Week

On Wednesday, Kentucky will increase the minimum wage more than three weeks ahead of the federal government. The federal minimum wage will go from $6.55 per hour to $7.25 per hour on July 24th. But Kentucky will raise its minimum wage on July 1st.Full time minimum wage workers will now make an extra $28 per week. Department of Workplace Standards Commissioner Michael Dixon says he's glad to see the wage go up, but he wishes workers were earning more."There's figures out there and studies done that tell you what a living wage is, but I would think $7.25 an hour would be well below the poverty level," he says.Tipped employees will not see a pay increase. Their minimum wage will remain at $2.13 per hour.
