MLK Day Events Planned In Louisville

Numerous events are planned Monday in the Louisville area to commemorate the Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior federal holiday.A King motorcade procession will begin at 28th and Broadway and end with a memorial service at Hill Street Missionary Baptist Church on Dixie Highway.The Kentucky Alliance against Racial and Political Repression and the Anne Braden Institute have launched a yearlong effort to share Dr. King's teachings.The Alliance's K.A. Owens says the groups have been studying a speech Dr. King delivered just before the escalation of the war in Vietnam."King talked about making a revolutionary choice, ending constant war in the name of defense, and making peace instead of war," he said.Louisville's Olmsted Parks Conservancy will mark the King holiday by clearing invasive plants and making other improvements to the Olmsted-designed Shawnee Park and nearby Chickasaw Park in west Louisville.The cleanup will be held from 10:00am-1:00pm Monday. Rick Howlett was midday host and the host of LPM's weekly talk show, "In Conversation." He was with LPM from 2001-2023 and held many different titles, including Morning Edition host, Assignment Editor and Interim News Director. He died in August 2023. Read a remembrance of Rick here.
