Molly Bingham On The Media's Role In Fostering Peace

Festival of Faiths

The 2016 Festival of Faiths begins Tuesday in Louisville.  Spiritual leaders, practitioners and others from around the world will gather for the five-day event.

This year’s festival will focus on how various spiritual traditions address violence.

I'll be talking this week with some of the festival participants, starting with international journalist Molly Bingham. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, The Independent and Vanity Fair.

The Louisville native is also a member of the board that oversees WFPL’s Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting.

Bingham will take part in a panel discussion Wednesday called “Media and the Public Trust.”

She begins our interview by describing Orb Media, a nonprofit journalism initiative that she launched in Washington.

Listen to the interview in the player above.

On Orb's mission:

"Orb is looking at the digital era as a tremendous opportunity to upgrade the role and the reach of journalism. And we do that by producing journalism that unites us as a global community around our human story, so that we can better recognize and manage our interdependence and these amazing opportunities and challenges that we face as a human community, rather than as any national or cultural community."

On participating in this year's Festival of Faiths:

"I'm really proud because I think the Festival of Faiths hosts such wonderful and meaningful conversations about things that matter to all of us. I think this year they've really keenly identified that media plays an important role in shaping our world, and I'm impressed that they're willing to dive into a conversation about public trust and the media."
