New Albany Mayor Quiet On Smoking Ban

New Albany mayor Doug England has been staying quiet about whether he will sign into law a smoking ban passed by the city council. The legislation calls for a ban in enclosed public places, including bars and restaurants. England will announce his decision at a 10 AM press conference on Tuesday.Better Breathers Club of New Albany leader Julie Hall is urging England to sign the ban into law. She says other cities have been wise to ban smoking.“I don’t want to get into lots of debates or political implications or anything, but they think 10% of lung cancers are secondhand smoke," says Hall. The ban passed the New Albany city council with a 5-4 vote. If England vetoes the measure, it could be overridden by a 6-3 vote at the council’s next meeting on September 4th.
