Indiana Students Recognized for Anti-Idling PSA

Local students are getting recognition from Metro Government for their role in producing a Public Service Announcementdesigned to reduce vehicle idling. The students from Silver Creek High School in Sellersburg, Indiana were honored at the Metro Air Pollution Control District board meeting today. In the PSA, three students wearing black shirts labeled with air pollutants—nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide and benzene—go around harassing people who are trying to enjoy the outdoors, including a child and a tennis player.Mary Beth Coffman is the media teacher at Silver Creek High School. She was approached by a local television station interested in promoting the Air Pollution Control District’s Idle Free Louisville campaign.“And of course we jumped at the chance because we’re a very small school and have a very small media program,” Coffman said. “So we definitely wanted to take them up on it.”The district’s campaign urges drivers to turn cars off if they’re stopped for more than 10 seconds. Besides saving gas, the move reduces the exhaust fumes that pollute Louisville’s air.
