New Curator Starts Work at the Speed Art Museum

The Speed Art Museum now has a new curator of contemporary art. WFPL’s Elizabeth Kramer has more.Suzanne Weaver started in the position last week, taking the job that has been vacant since July when Julien Robson left for the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.Weaver says the current recession mean some changes for the Speed Museum and others."Museums need to rethink how they’ve been doing exhibitions," Weaver says, "to be more creative, innovative in looking at their collections and using that, realizing what a great source it is."She says she already has ideas she wants to see become reality."I want to find innovative ways to showcase contemporary art with other kinds of art throughout the museum — don’t do it in expected ways and one gallery per se," she says.Weaver's future projects include a show of work from the Speed’s collection to complement an exhibit in March of minimalist and conceptual art from Dorothy and Herbert Vogel. The New York couple of modest means accumulated thousands of works, many by well-known, avant-garde artists. An interview with the Speed Museum's New Curator of Contemporary Art.
