New Indiana Charter Schools Chief On The Job

The woman appointed to oversee Indiana’s new Charter School Board has begun her duties. The board was created by the Indiana General Assembly as part of a new law aimed at expanding the state’s charter schools. The first executive director is Claire Fiddian-Green, who previously headed an Indianapolis-based education organization called the Mind Trust.Critics have said having more charter schools would deprive traditional public schools of already scarce funding and other resources; Fiddian-Green says charters offer parents an educational choice, but must meet higher expectations."The ultimate accountability is that they can be closed for lack of performance, and in exchange they get to imbue lots of innovative practices into schools so that students who may not sit well with a one-size-fits-all approach can attend a charter school that better meets their needs," she said. There are currently 62 charter schools in Indiana. The new board will review applications for new schools, the first of which would open in 2012. The seven member board will be appointed when the new law goes into effect July 1st. Our interview with Claire Fiddian-Green can be heard here:
