New Indiana Fire Law In Effect For Landlords, Tenants

State fire officials in Indiana say some new safety rules are now in place for people rental property tenants and their landlords.Indiana Assistant Fire Marshal Jim Bennett says landlords who don't install working smoke detectors when tenants move into their property are now subject to fines of up to $10,000."Not only does it increase the penalties but it also requires the tenant to sign off that there is in fact a working smoke detector upon taking the rental papers or whenever they want to move into the rental," Bennett said.The new law was passed by the Indiana General Assembly earlier this year.Enforcement started this month.Bennett says more information is available from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.
