Norton Healthcare Supports Western Louisville Mothers

Norton Healthcare has awarded Metro Government a $572,000 two-year grant that will expand services to mothers and infants on Louisville’s Westside. The grant was awarded to Louisville’s Department of Public Health and Wellness to support the Healthy Start initiative, which provides case managers and preventative resources to combat infant mortality. Western Louisville has around twice the rate of infant mortality than the rest of the Metro area. The program can help, but it takes a commitment from mothers.“It’s our job as leaders in the city to make sure that applying resources to those areas so everyone gets a fair shot at what we got going on here,” said Mayor Greg Fischer. The program has a 60 percent success rate when compared to women of the same area who haven’t used the services, said Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, Public Health and Wellness director.“It actually provides a number of resources to women and children. A woman can enroll in the program during the prenatal period and can stage engaged in the program until the child reaches the age of two. So you can imagine that that’s a very exciting time for many families, but can be challenging, especially for first time moms in terms of what to expect.”The program has already helped over 7,000 families since it begun in 1998 and the grants expects to extend services to an additional 400 mothers, said Nesbitt.Healthy Start receives over $1 million of federal funds. Norton previously awarded Louisville a $308,000 grant in 2009.ZIP codes included in the program: 40202, 40208, 40211, 40210, 20212 and parts of Old Louisville.
