Nucleus Innovation Park Announces New Tenants

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and University of Louisville president James Ramsey have announced six new tenants for Nucleus Innovation Park.Nucleus is University of Louisville’s life sciences corridor and is meant to provide space for businesses working in the field to relocate or start up in downtown Louisville. The project including a four-building park on the former Haymarket location, has been delayed nearly two years following the recession."We really need to take a lead role and be the lead player in helping this community build a new economic cluster or enhance an economic cluster around health care life sciences," said Ramsey. But 23 businesses have now filled MedCenter 3, where nearly all the companies are located, said Vickie Yates Brown, CEO of Nucleus. As such, Nucleus has converted a conference room into office space.Fischer spoke in a crowded lobby and he said if more businesses relocate to MedCenter 3, the lobby will have to adapt.“If we’re really successful we’re not going to have this space here much longer. We could easily put in this area, three or four more companies. I’m serious, you think I’m joking," said Fischer. The six new tenants include all health-related companies, and will add 20 new employees to nearly 130 already there. The tight quarters are a good thing, said Fischer.“What you see in cities that are ‘idea cities’ is density. You see lots of people living around each other, lots of people working around each other, because it’s that type of interaction that creates and leads to the new ideas.”Several of the companies located at MedCenter 3 are working on letters of intent for migrating to space in the old Haymarket location where development is expected to be complete in early 2013.
