Occupy Louisville Encampment Ends Tonight

Occupy Louisville demonstrators are being forced to leave Founder’s Square by midnight Friday, but the group plans on relocating its operation to office space in west Louisville.Demonstrators were allowed to stay at their encampment after the city granted Occupy Louisville a temporary permit earlier this year. That permit will expire tonight after the city rejected demonstrators’ appeal for a new permit this week.Long-time demonstrator Karl Zollner said support for the movement has waned over the past several months, and the headquarters has now been moved to the Braden Center, which will allow the group to focus and plan strategies to carry on the movement’s themes of fighting the corruption of money in politics, and inequality.“When we transitioned from Sixth and Jefferson to the current park is when the media hub basically collapsed," said Zollner. The new location won’t technically include an occupation, but it will allow those participants most active to continue working, said Zollner.“If the amount of support from activists from within Occupy Louisville and the community at large would increase enough to be able to do it again, we would love to have a camp," he said. One option is locating private property somewhere downtown that would allow demonstrators to erect tents once again.Louisville Police Chief Steve Conrad previously told WFPL his department will be ready should individuals associated with the movement refuse to leave Founder’s Square. But Zollner and several other demonstrators have already left the space.City officials say Founder’s Square will be fenced off for around a month for re-sodding.
