Louisville residents will have the chance to go back in time 50 years this weekend at an homage to a series of concerts organized by Andy Warhol.
“Reloaded Plastic Inevitable” is a fundraiser for Art Sanctuary, a nonprofit arts collective in Germantown. The evening will recreate the “Exploding Plastic Inevitable” events created by Warhol, which included music by the Velvet Underground, dancers, and Warhol films projected on the walls.
Joe Mays, one of the organizers of the event, tracked down a number of rare Warhol films, including “Chelsea Girls,” which has never been shown before in Louisville.
Mays hopes the event will have the feel of one of Warhol’s legendary parties.
“We just had the idea that it would be fun to recreate the 'Exploding Plastic Inevitable' for a night," Mays said. "Well, if you’re going to do that, you need a Velvet Underground tribute band, so we’ve got that.”
Two other bands who cite the Velvet Underground as inspiration, Sapat and Ut Gret, will also perform. Ut Gret will perform a live soundtrack to a silent Warhol film.
Mays said partygoers are invited to dress in 1960s clothing and even decorate themselves with tin foil.
“Wearing foil on their clothes was actually a big part of what the crowd would do at the 'Exploding Plastic Inevitable,' so we’re actually encouraging people -- just for fun we’re going to have a contest, the best foil accessorized or homemade foil outfit,” Mays said.
The event happens on Saturday night at 6 p.m. at Art Sanctuary, 1433 S. Shelby St. A film screening will follow the next day. Here's more information.
