Paul to Perform Volunteer Eye Surgeries

Keeping up with his skills as a licensed ophthalmologist, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., will briefly return to the operating room Sunday to perfom six free cataract eyes surgeries.Because Senate ethics rules prohibit Paul from receiving pay for performing those surgeries, he will work as a volunteer for Surgery on Sunday, a non-profit group in Lexington that provides outpatient services for those who can't afford health insurance and do not qualify for government assistance. From the Herald-Leader's Bluegrass Politics:Paul joked before a crowd of several hundred at Fasig-Tipton that his volunteer work for Surgery on Sunday “is kind of a selfish thing on my part.

“While I won’t get paid, I want to have a backup in case I lose my day job,” he said.

During his speech about his “day job,” Paul claimed that the federal government over-regulates businesses.

In May, Paul quietly lobbied members of Congress to give him an exemption from those ethics rules in order to allow him to bill patients.
