House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged the state lawmakers to push Capitol Hill for an extension of enhanced funding for Medicaid and other programs known as FMAP, which has enough House support for passage but needs GOP votes to clear the Senate.

“You are the most eloquent and persuasive voices on this subject,” she said. “You know best why this is necessary. I urge you to tell the Republicans in the Senate about the real cost to your communities of their oppositions.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky told the group he’s opposed to more stimulus-type funding from Washington because it doesn’t stimulate the economy.

“I know the states would love to have (the funding), but it isn’t generating economic growth and the economic growth is the way you generate revenue,” he told reporters after his speech.

McConnell is calling on Democrats to extend the Bush era tax cuts as one way to help the economy recover from the recession.
