Pilot Program Targets At-Risk Youth

Several organizations are joining forces to launch a pilot project for at-risk youngsters in Louisville.It's calledBadges for Baseball. It's a mentoring program that pairs Louisville Metro Police officers with young people ages eight through fourteen.They'll will take part in baseball or softball programs at selected Boys and Girls Clubsacross the community.Police Chief Robert White says the officers will also offer guidance off the playing field."i know that one little thing can impact someone's life, " White said.    "I think this has the great potential to impact several lives in the community, not just sports."The Badges for Baseball concept was created by the Baltimore-based Cal Ripken, Senior Foundation.The Kentucky program is also getting support from the state attorney general's office, Congressman John Yarmuth and the Louisville Slugger Company.

Rick Howlett was midday host and the host of LPM's weekly talk show, "In Conversation." He was with LPM from 2001-2023 and held many different titles, including Morning Edition host, Assignment Editor and Interim News Director. He died in August 2023. Read a remembrance of Rick here.
