U of L Medical Center Taking More Time to Find Partner

The University of Louisville Medical Center is going to take more time searching for a new business partner. The UMC put out a request for proposals for a new partner earlier this year, with a goal to finish the deal by the end of this month. But today (Thursday), officials released a statement saying they need more time. They stress that talks have been productive, but say it may take until the end of the year to secure a deal. The search for a partner follows the governor's rejection last year of a controversial merger attempt by UMC. The organization had sought to partner with Catholic Health Initiatives and Jewish Hospital, but the plan was scrapped over concerns that religious doctrine would govern care. From UMC: We continue to have productive and meaningful dialogue with all the respondents and thank them for their dedication as we work through the technical details required in the negotiations. As the process moves forward, it has become clear that our discussions will likely move past this September and may conclude closer to the end of the year. “We are making significant progress in finding the best option for our much-needed partnership. Our potential partners share our commitment to ensuring the continuation of all University Medical Center and UofL Health Sciences Center services and addressing the issues raised by the Governor and Attorney General last year. The respondents also commit to ensuring that University Medical Center and the UofL Health Sciences Center can continue providing the highest quality care for all patients, educating tomorrow’s health care professionals, and creating the knowledge to heal. “The additional time will result in a more solid relationship that is in the best interest of the hospital and cancer center, our staff, and the Louisville community.”
