Program Launched To Propel More Youth Into College

By Sheila Ash Officials from the University of Louisville and Jefferson County Public Schools announced today a new program to inspire low-income and minority students to go to college. The university will receive a $2.6 million grant as part of a five-year partnership with the Council for Opportunity in Education and the GE Foundation.U of L President Dr. James Ramsey says the program will target 600 students at Shawnee, Moore and Fern Creek high schools."The money will used to hire a college coach at each school and will be used to mentor students individually. Provide them academic support, but also provide the students with the opportunity to visit college campuses, meet with college faculty and learn more about the college experience so they’ll be comfortable with that transition," he said. U of L will oversee the program at Shawnee and Moore high schools, while Kentucky State University, which is receiving $1.3 million, will head the effort at Fern Creek High School.
