Program Provides Pediatric Legal Services

A program that helps children and their families with legal issues related to their medical care is being launched at some Louisville facilities. It’s called Doctors and Lawyers for Kids.  "The way that it works is that we accept clients that are patients of U of L Department of Pediatrics clinics and patients at Kosair Children’s Hospital.   Our services are always free to people who qualify and we represent clients in a variety of civil matters," says Andrea Hunt, one of the participating attorneys. Those civil matters include housing, custody, immigration and tax issues.  For example, Hunt says an attorney could be called upon to intervene if a landlord refuses to clean up mold that is causing a child to suffer chronic breathing problems. The medical partnership with the Louisville Bar Association and the Legal Aid Society began as a pilot program in 2009.
