Public Meetings Announced for National Heritage Area

The National Park Service has announced a series of public meetings next month to inform Kentuckians about an effort underway to name some parts of the state to a new National Heritage Area.U.S. Senator Jim Bunning started the effort in 2008; it seeks to name the state’s History Center, Old State Capitol, and Kentucky Military History Museum to a new National Heritage Area in honor of Abraham Lincoln. Stuart Sanders with the Kentucky Historical Society says the effort usually takes years.“I think they have probably about two years to do the actual feasibility study, but we’ve heard that because of the momentum that was generated as part of Kentucky’s role in the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial they already have a lot of information at the fingertips they can use to really put toward this feasibility study," says Sanders.Meetings are scheduled throughout Kentucky to gather public input.Two are scheduled in Louisville on January 6th at Farmington Historic Plantation.
