An actor who had a long career at Actors Theatre of Louisvilledied Monday. WFPL’s Elizabeth Kramer reports.
Ray Fry was 86 and began working at Actors Theatre of Louisville in 1974. For more than two decades Fry created new roles each season and in performances during the Humana Festival of New American Plays.Jeff Rodgers worked with Fry at Actors Theatre and says most people remember him for one particular role."Ray Fry played Scrooge in 'A Christmas Carol' for over ten years and people across the community loved to come see him each year," Rodgers says. "It was part of their annual holiday tradition."But Fry also performed on Broadway and was a force in the regional theater movement, says Rodgers."He began as one of the founding members of San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater, and then he was one of the founders of the Lincoln Center Theater in New York, before coming to Louisville, where he was a company member here beginning in 1974 and worked with us through the late 1990s," Rodgers says.Fry, who grew up in Gary, Indiana, also performed on Broadway.There will be a memorial service for Fry on May 17 at Actors Theatre's Bingham Theatre on May 17 at 10:30 a.m. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Actors Theatre of Louisville.
