Record Number of Horses Pre-entered for 2011 Breeders' Cup

Next month’s Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Churchill Downs are expected to include a record number of the world’s top thoroughbreds. Officials announced today that 193 horses have been pre-entered for the two-day event, which features 15 races and some $26 million in purse money. This is Churchill Downs’ eighth time hosting the Breeders Cup since it was launched in 1984. It moves next year to Santa Anita, California.Breeders’ Cup President Craig Fravel says he isn’t sure when it will be back in Louisville."Right now we haven’t made any plans beyond 2012. There’s no big secret we’re talking to New York about 2013 and beyond that time frame, we’re still working on developing long-term strategy about a future site," he said.Fravel says officials haven’t ruled out picking a permanent site for the championships.Last year’s event drew more than 114,000 people to Churchill Downs, the largest attendance since the Cup was expanded to a two-day event in 2007.The 2011 Breeders' Cup is November 4 and 5.
