Regulators Seek Comments on Kentucky Water Pollution Plan Update

The Kentucky Division of Water is seeking public comments on its updated planto deal with water pollution..Under the Clean Water Act, the Division of Water is required to present a plan every year to address what’s known as “non-point source pollution.” That’s pollution that doesn’t come out of a pipe, and includes everything on the ground that eventually washes into waterways.Paulette Akers is the head of the Division of Water’s Watershed Management Branch.“The value of non-point source is that it’s everybody’s responsibility,” she says. “It’s not just something that’s the responsibility of one permittee or one factory. We’re talking about picking up after your dog or not throwing your cigarette butts out the window.”Akers says the division’s Non-point Source Management Plan can be considered a comprehensive reference for how the state handles the pollution, the resources and the partnerships available to address the problem. The comment period for the plan is open until the end of the month. Comments may be submitted electronically at James.Roe@ky.gov or mailed to Kentucky Division of Water, ATTN: Nonpoint Source Program, 200 Fair Oaks Lane, 4th Floor, Frankfort, KY 40601.
