From Kentucky Public Radio's Tony McVeighA diverse coalition of religious organizations in Kentucky is calling for a calm, dignified approach to the ongoing discussion of state and national immigration issues.They call themselves the Kentucky Faith Communities Immigration Coalition. They’re from all over the state and represent many faiths, including Catholic, Jewish, Methodist, Episcopalian, Quaker, Evangelical Christian, and Presbyterian.Coalition member Dr. Greg Davis of Lexington says they’ve come together to support laws affirming immigrant dignity, preserving immigrant families and acknowledging the value of their presence in our nation.“In the Book of Leviticus, we are commanded that when a stranger resides with you in your land, you shall not wrong him. The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as one of your citizens. You shall love him as yourself, for you are strangers in the land of Egypt,” David said.In recent weeks, the coalition has gathered the names of more than 1,700 Kentuckians who pledge to be more welcoming to immigrants. Eventually, petition drive results will be turned over to state leaders, including members of Congress and the General Assembly.
