Update: Kentucky state capitol lockdown lifted

The Kentucky state Capitol is no longer under lockdown.

The Capitol was secured on Tuesday morning after a man being chased by police fled to Capitol grounds. Police have since arrested the man, 23-year-old Joshua Lee Gibson of Louisville.

The Herald-Leader reported the lockdown included the Capitol building and Capitol Annex, which house Kentucky’s executive and legislative branches. Some area schools were also locked down.

Assistant Chief of Frankfort Police Lynn Aubrey said in a press release that officers attempted to talk to Gibson about a stolen car, but he fled. “Several gun shots were fired from the area of the individual,” prompting a pursuit, Aubrey said.

She said Gibson was charged with fleeing, evading arrest and trespassing. Aubrey said a second person was involved in the incident, but police are not actively looking for that person.

A spokesperson for Gov. Andy Beshear said in a statement that he “appreciates the professionalism and swift response from the Frankfort City Police, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the Kentucky State Police.”

The spokesperson confirmed the chase began elsewhere but ended on Capitol grounds with an arrest.
