Richmond Wonders: Are We a University Community or a Community With a University?

The presidential search committee for Eastern Kentucky University has been established.Current President Doug Whitlock will retire next summer. Former State Senator and Richmond City Manager Ed Worley will serve on the eleven-member committee. He says it's important to find a president who is comfortable with business and academia.“Are we a community with a university in it or are we a university community and there is a very distinct difference and I think who ever the next president needs to identify that this is a university community and they want to work with the community to grow this as Richmond, Madison County and Eastern Kentucky University together," he says.Worley adds that a wide search is essential.“The challenge is to stay open minded, to not be closed minded and focus on only a particular type of candidate whether it be academic or business. I think you need to find the right fit.”In a message to staff, EKU Board of Regents Chairman Gary Abney said the board will also select a private company which will assist the search Committee.
