Rogers Speaks In Favor Of Anti-Meth Bill

U.S. Congressman Hal Rogers is speaking out in favor of prescription drug legislation aimed at fighting methamphetamine production in Kentucky. Many cold and allergy medicines contain pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient in the illegal manufacture of methamphetamine.  Legislation under consideration in Frankfort would require prescriptions for cold remedies containing pseudoephedrine, and Congressman Hal Rogers is urging passage.“This bill is not about eliminating cold medications.  It’s about saving lives.  And it can be done by requiring prescriptions for just 15 boxes of pseudoephedrine products," he says.Rogers says 137 other cold and allergy remedies that don’t contain pseudoephedrine will be still be available over-the-counter.  Despite the congressman’s appeal, the legislation has a steep hill to climb.  No votes have been taken yet, but Pat Davis, wife of U.S. Congressman Geoff Davis of Kentucky, is among the opponents."I think it’s unfair to punish the vast majority of law abiding citizens who have cold or allergies because of the criminal activities of a few," she says. The bill cleared the Senate Judiciary Commitee, but a similar measure in the House still awaits a committee vote.
