Salvage Operations Underway For Two Sunken Barges

Salvage efforts are underway to remove two sunken barges from the Ohio River near downtown Louisville. The barges carrying iron ore sank nearly a week ago after taking on water. The company that owns the vessels – Ingram Barge Company – is investigating the cause.Dive teams examined the condition of the barges yesterday (Wednesday) and salvage operations started this morning. Coast Guard spokesperson John Adkins says other river operations are not affected right now."There’s no river closures, everybody, all the vessel traffic is going with restrictions. We have two assist vessels that are on scene that are helping all the vessel traffic both up and down bound," he said.Adkins says the salvage process could take up to ten days.
