Second Hearing Set For Kenwood Drive-In Designation

The Louisville Metro Landmarks Commission has postponed a decision today on a request to grant local landmark status to the Kenwood Drive-In.A south Louisville neighborhood group petitioned for the designation, which would require the property owner to submit a plan to the Architectural Review Committee before altering or tearing down any structures. The commission was scheduled to vote on the matter but instead granted a request by the Kenwood’s owner, National Amusements, to conduct a second public hearing. No one spoke against the designation at the first hearing in June, but the company says it’s opposed to any changes that could affect the sale of the property. The drive-in has been shut down since 2008, when it was put up for sale. The Kenwood opened in 1949 off Southside Drive. It’s Louisville’s last standing drive-in theatre. The next public hearing will be held September 15. Photos and other information about the Kenwood Drive-In are in the Metro Historic Landmarks and Preservation District Commission's Kenwood Drive-In Designation Report.
