Senate Panel Holds Hearing On Northup Nomination

Former Congresswoman Anne Northup of Louisville is expected to win quick Senate confirmation to join the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Northup, a Republican, was nominated for the post by President Obama last week.The commission is being expanded from three to five members, which will include three Republicans and two Democrats.She testified Wednesday before the Senate's Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee."If I'm confirmed, I will do everything possible to think of the familes I'm responsible for and to protect them as my own," Northup said.Northup, whose nomination did not draw objection from any committee members, vowed to keep politics out of her decision-making as a commissionerNorthup served five terms in the U.S. House before she was defeated by Democrat John Yarmuth in 2006.
