PGA Seniors Dodge Storms As Championship Begins

The Senior PGA Championship is underway at Louisville’s Valhalla Golf Club. Opening round play was interrupted for more than three hours by a thunderstorm. The first day of play had already been postponed by an hour-and-a-half to allow the course to recover from heavy rains that drenched the area Wednesday night.Another round of rough weather around midday sent golfers to the clubhouse and fans looking for shelter. Kyle Swafford of London, Kentucky and his friend Johnny Shouse of Lawrenceburg waited out the storm at the souvenir tent.Swafford said he hasn’t decided whom to root for in the championship."Tom Lehman’s always tough and of course we pull for Kenny Perry, being a homeboy," he said.Tom Lehman is the defending Senior PGA champion. Franklin, Kentucky native Kenny Perry finished second in the 1996 overall PGA Championship at Valhalla.About half the field, 78 players, completed the first round before it was halted due to darkness this evening.   Japan's Kiyoshi Murota is the early leader at six under par.The Senior Championship continues through Sunday.

Rick Howlett was midday host and the host of LPM's weekly talk show, "In Conversation." He was with LPM from 2001-2023 and held many different titles, including Morning Edition host, Assignment Editor and Interim News Director. He died in August 2023. Read a remembrance of Rick here.
