WFPL’s Elizabeth Kramer has more.“Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?”won the duPont-Columbia University Award, known as the Pulitzer Prize of broadcast journalism. The series documented health disparities in Louisville between people of different socioeconomic groups and races as well as efforts by the Louisville Metro Health Department to address them.Series creator and executive producer Larry Adelman says those efforts show communities in similar situations how they can begin to address the disparities."Louisville has set up the Health Equity Center," Adelman says, "that is beginning to say, 'Hey, how can the social and economic arrangements that drive inequality in Louisville be addressed and improve our health as a result?'"Adelman says thousands of people have seen the series since it first aired on PBS last spring."There have been more than 12,000 town hall meetings, trainings, policy forums all around the country from church basements to state legislatures where people are looking at the series and asking, 'Hmm. How can we address these glaring inequities?,'" says Adelman. Adelman says he and his colleagues are still in touch with Louisvillians featured in the series.
