Sherman Minton Bridge Reopens

The Sherman Minton Bridge is once again open to traffic. The westbound lanes of the bridge opened shortly before midnight. The bridge, which carries traffic on I-64 across the Ohio River between Kentucky and Indiana, was closed in September after bridge inspectors discovered a crack in a beam.Since then, crews have been working to reinforce the bridge's weight-bearing beams. The bridge's closure reduced Louisville's Ohio River crossings to two, and caused headaches for commuters.  Mayor Greg Fischer sent out a statement praising construction company Hall Contracting for finishing the job nearly two weeks before the deadline. “The reopening of the Sherman Minton is certainly great news. The bridge’s closing has been a very clear reminder that our region’s economic vitality is tied to cross-river mobility -- that’s why getting the Ohio River Bridges Project under construction is so important. Although the closing had a significant impact on our region, it also brought out the best in our people. Commuters adjusted their schedules, businesses allowed employees to work staggered hours and city and state transportation officials worked diligently to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. Hats off to Hall Contracting for getting the job done early.”
