Stimulus Dollars Prevent JCPS Layoffs

Many layoffs tentatively planned for Jefferson County Public Schools employees to meet a budget shortfall will likely be averted.JCPS Superintendent Sheldon Berman says the district stands to receive about $52 million in the next two years from the recently passed federal stimulus package."These funds will absolutely prevent layoffs," he says. "We will significantly reduce the number of layoffs we have projected. We have projected over 264 layoffs, I now think that we will be able to cut that by more than half."Most of the layoffs were in administrative areas. JCPS also stands to receive several million dollars for school renovations and construction.
