Student Shot and Injured at Fern Creek High School

Update 6:45 a.m. Wednesday: More on the ArrestThe 16-year-old accused in the shooting at Fern Creek High School on Tuesday afternoon is being held at the Jefferson County Youth Detention Center on multiple charges, according to a Louisville Metro Police news release issued late Tuesday evening.Police arrested the 16-year-old at about4 p.m. at an apartment in the 5100 block of Oxford Place, which is near the high school. Police said the apartment is not the suspect's home and they are trying to determine the connection the suspect had to the apartment.A weapon was retrieved during the arrest, according to the release.The suspect, whose name was not released, faces charges including first-degree assault, first-degree wanton endangerment, unlawful possession of a weapon on school property and more. The victim is a 15-year-old male. He is in stable condition at University Hospital, police said.Update 5:05: Police Make ArrestLouisville Metro Police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley confirmed that an arrest was made in connection to the shooting at Fern Creek High School.Smiley said a male suspect was arrested around 4 p.m.  She said police have not yet interviewed the suspect, so she could not give details regarding the suspect, including where the arrest happened.

Update 3:14: Injured Student Reunited with FamilyA student shot Tuesday afternoon at Fern Creek High School has injuries that are not life-threatening, a Louisville Metro Police spokesman said.Police believe the suspected shooter fled the school, LMPD spokesman Phil Russell said during a news conference. No arrests had been made.The family of the injured student has been notified, said Ben Jackey, a Jefferson County Public Schools spokesman. The injured student was taken to University Hospital and reunited with family.Other Fern Creek students were taken by bus to nearby Fern Creek Park. There, parents are able to pick up their children if they present identification, Jackey said.WFPL's Jacob Ryan reports that hundreds of family members of Fern Creek students have gathered at the school and park on Tuesday afternoon.Police would not say what type of weapon was used in the shooting. Police also wouldn't say whether the shooter was also a Fern Creek student. An investigation is on-going.We'll have more from Jacob and photographer Alix Mattingly later today.Earlier: A person was injured Tuesday in an incident—possibly a shooting—at Fern Creek High School, according to multiplemedia reports.The school is reportedly on lockdown. School and police officials could not immediately be reached for comment. WFPL has a reporter en route and will have updates later.
