Franklin & Lucy

It's been more than 60 years since President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died in Warm Springs, Georgia. But FDR continues to fascinate historians and students of the U.S. presidency, particularly his relationship with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and other women in his life. Author and historian Joseph Persico has written a book about President Roosevelt's affair with Lucy Mercer Rutherford, whom he met at a young age and who was with him when he died. It's called Franklin and Lucy: President Roosevelt, Mrs. Rutherford and the Other Remarkable Women in His Life. Joseph Persico joined us by phone from his home in Guilderland, New York.

2008 Kentucky Primary - U.S. SenateThis Tuesday, Kentucky Democrats will have seven candidates from which to chose as their nominee for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Mitch McConnell. Pets and the Economy

The Kentucky Humane Society animal shelter near Louisville reports a more than 140% increase in the number of pets being dropped off for adoption. The most common reason? Owners can’t afford them any more. Foreclosures, higher prices for food and fuel – they’re all adding up to a crisis for humans and their animal companions. Meanwhile, wealthier Americans are still able to lavish their pets with fancy foods and services. The American Pet Products Manufacturers Association reports that we’ll spend more than $43 billion on pet products this year alone. WFPL’s Kristin Espeland reports.

Band Education

Students from fledgling band programs have been performing for the community. The programs are part of an effort to boost school spirit and academic performance, as WFPL’s Elizabeth Kramer reports.

Carollton Bus CrashMay 14th marked the 20th anniversary of the Carrollton Bus Crash. The wreck that killed 27 people returning to Radcliff, Kentucky from a church outing stands as the worst drunk driving accident in U.S. history. WFPL’s Gabe Bullard talks with National Transportation Safety Board specialist Danielle Roeber about the accident and how it changed highway safety laws in Kentucky.

New Kentucky Supreme Court JusticeHistory will be made next month at the Kentucky Supreme Court, as a new chief justice is sworn-in. Kentucky Public Radio’s Tony McVeigh says it’s a rare occurrence.

Jerramy Fine

Whether it’s as a princess they've seen in a Disney movie, or a princess in a favorite childhood book, at some point in their lives most little girls dream of growing up and marrying a prince. But for author Jerramy Fine, it was more than a childhood fantasy. At the young age of six, Fine found Peter Phillips name in a diagram of the British Royal Family and picked him out as her future prince. From Colorado to London, she single mindedly pursued Phillips to full fill her destiny. Along the way she met some interesting characters, learned about perseverance and discovered sometimes a prince (or just a plain old royal) is just another guy. Robin Fisher talks to Jerramy Fine about her memoir, Someday My Prince Will Come: True Adventures of a Wannabe Princess.
