The fall semester at the University of Louisville be the first for a campus-wide suicide prevention program.Classes resume next week at U of L, where 25 faculty and staff members have been trained in a suicide prevention technique known as QPR.Trish Cooper, Director of Nursing Services at U of L's campus health centers, says "it's basically for the lay person, the Q stands for question, the P for persuade and the R for refer. And its just for when you encounter a person who may be suicidally depressed. What does a lay peson do with that individual to dissuade them from committing suicide?"Cooper says an additional 25 people will undergo the training this semester. She says there are no statistics at U of L or in Kentucky to determine how many students are prone to suicide or suicidal thoughts. Nationally, suicide is the third leading cause of death for people ages 15 to 24.
