Teenagers Rally to Fight Climate Change

Louisville-area teenagers are organizing to raise awareness about climate change. They’re holding a march and rally tomorrow. The event is organized by Our Earth Now, a local environmental group run by teenagers.Co-founder Fiona Grant says the group is affiliated with national non-profit iMatter, which was founded on a simple principle:“Teens matter the most when fighting climate change because we will be most affected by climate change because we’re going to be living through it in a way that our parents aren’t,” she says.Grant, who’s a senior at Presentation Academy, says she was inspired by a trip to Washington D.C. to protest the Keystone XL pipeline.“I learned a lot about climate change and about my role in it and also just about how important large actions are in getting people excited and educating people,” she says. “I came back and I wanted to see something like it in Louisville. And I thought, what better way to see something like it in Louisville than to do it myself.”Grant says climate change should matter to everyone in the area, despite, say, an important basketball game that’s also happening tomorrow.“I was very upset by, actually, somebody commented on our event wall and said ‘the game matters more,’” she says.Tomorrow’s event will include live music and speakers, and aims to both educate and empower others to fight climate change. The march will begin tomorrow at 6th and Chestnut at noon and end in a rally at Waterfront Park. It will be over at 6:00, before the basketball game begins.
