Thirty Kentucky Congregations Will Participate in Global Warming "Preach-In"

Next weekend, thirty church congregations across Kentucky will participate in a nationwide effort to raise awareness about global warming: the third annual National Preach-In on Global Warming. Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light director Tim Darst says there are a variety of ways congregations can participate.“We’re participating with congregations from all over the country that are including activities to educate their people about climate change,” he said. “So it could be preaching a sermon or a homily, it could be having a film screening.”Darst says the event is always Valentine’s Day weekend, which speaks to the belief shared by many religions that people should love their neighbors, which Darst says extends to not polluting their air.He says the event is becoming more popular.“Every year we have more and more congregations that are participating because it seems like this is an issue that people are finally realizing this is a social justice issue, it’s a moral issue that a lot of congregations need to get involved in,” he said.Kentucky IPL has distributed a kit to the thirty congregations in the state that have indicated interest. Of the thirty churches participating in Kentucky, more than half are in Louisville. Others include congregations in Frankfort, Hopkinsville, Elizabethtown and Bowling Green. Nationwide, more than 1000 religious organizations are participating.
