Thoney Files To Enter GOP Primary For Senate

From Kentucky Public Radio's Tony McVeighIf U-S Senator Jim Bunning proceeds with plans to seek re-election next year, a northern Kentucky Republican says he will try to defeat Bunning in the primary.Roger Thoney, a retired engineer from Highland Heights, told reporters at the State Capitol he knows it will be an expensive race.“You know, everybody says you need ten million dollars or so. We’re gonna plan to raise it over the Internet. I mean, if we can raise about five percent of what President Obama raised, we’ll have it,” he said.It’s not Thoney’s first foray into Kentucky politics. He ran as a Republican in unsuccessful fourth district congressional campaigns in 2000 and 2002. In 2003, he ran as an Independent for Lt. Governor, on a ticket with actor Sonny Landham.Democratic Lt. Governor Dan Mongiardo announced earlier this year he'll seek his party's nomination for the seat.
