Two State Aircraft To Be Auctioned

Kentucky is putting two surplus airplanes up for auction on eBay.  Gov. Steve Beshear says the twin-engine, 1975 Piper Navajo and the single-engine, 1967 Cessna Skyhawk are both in excellent condition, but no longer needed.“We did an assessment of all of the aircraft before we made this decision and we were assured by the Justice Cabinet, as well as the Department of Aviation and others, that these two planes were no longer needed and we could dispose of them and realize whatever monies we could from them, and cut off the expense of maintaining them,” he said.  Beshear says the Navajo was used by Kentucky State Police, and Somerset Community College flew the Cessna.  Both were bought as surplus in the late 1990’s.  Beshear says the state’s reserve price must be met before the planes will be sold, but he wouldn’t speculate on how much revenue they may raise at auction.
