The Republican Governors Association has resumed airing commercials supporting GOP gubernatorial candidate Matt Bevin two weeks before Election Day.
The association's political action committee stopped airing pro-Bevin commercials earlier this month, raising questions about the strength of the Republican candidate's campaign.
On Tuesday morning, the RGA said it was making a seven-figure ad buy in seven markets across Kentucky. The commercial compares Democratic candidate Jack Conway to President Obama, who has a 31 percent approval rating in Kentucky.
RGA spokesman Jon Thompson said that the organization is committed to making sure Bevin is elected.
“This new and large expenditure will ensure voters know who the real Jack Conway is: a career politician who has routinely put Barack Obama’s destructive liberal policies ahead of the well-being of the Commonwealth,” Thompson said in a statement. “Kentucky families cannot trust Barack Obama and Jack Conway to make things better."
Some saw the RGA's earlier freeze on Bevin ads as a reprimand for Bevin not raising enough money for his bid.
Bevin has struggled to fund raise and used his personal wealth to fund most of his campaign. As of the last campaign finance reporting deadline on Oct. 7, Bevin had raised $1.7 million — nearly $1 million of which was his own money. About $800,000 of Bevin's money came after the RGA pulled its ads.
Conway reported raising three times as much as Bevin, $6.1 million, and as of the reporting deadline had not contributed to his campaign.
According to Cook Political Report, the Kentucky governor’s race is a tossup between Bevin and Conway.
Election Day is Nov. 3.
