U of L Begins Textbook Rental Program

The University of Louisville has implemented a textbook rental program at bookstores on its Belknap and Health Sciences campuses. Officials say more than 300 titles will be available for rent this fall. Students who choose the rental option can in some cases spend less than half of the purchase cost of a new textbook.U of L Provost Shirley Willihnganz says the agreement with bookstore operator Barnes and Noble is one of several ways the university is trying to help students cut costs."We're encouraging our professors, for example, to make a decision about what textbooks they're going to use really early, because that allows Barnes and Noble to a lot more abillity to buy back books so they can sell them used as well as know what the rental market might look like," she said.Willinhnganz says U of L decided to implement the rental option after the success of a pilot program last spring.Other institutions across Kentucky already have or are starting rental programs, including the University of Kentucky.
